How to Move a Selection in Adobe Fireworks

Once you have made a selection to a bitmap image or object in Adobe Fireworks CS3, you can easily move that selection. Moving the selection will save you time from having to delete the selection and create a new one. Follow the steps below to find out how you can move a selection in Fireworks in just a few easy steps.

  1. Start Adobe Fireworks CS3 and open an existing document that contains a bitmap image you would like to select and then move that selection or create a new blank document and insert a bitmap image into it.

    Use the Marquee, Magic Wand or Lasso tools from the Fireworks toolbox to select the bitmap image. You can tell the image is selected because it will be surrounding by a moving black and white border often referred to as “marching ants.”

    Hover your mouse inside of the selection. Your cursor will turn into the move selection cursor. The cursor looks like a pointer attached to a dotted outline of a square. This means that you can move the current selection.

  4. Step 4

    Click when you see the move selection cursor and drag the selection to its new location. The selection will move along with you without disturbing the contents of the document inside of outside of the selection.

  5. Step 5

    Release the mouse button when you are happy with the placement of the selection. You can now use the selection to edit or delete the contents that are within the border of the selection.

How to Edit a Mask in Adobe Fireworks

A bitmap mask is a great way to hide and emphasize objects within your Adobe Fireworks CS3 document. After you have created a mask and linked it to certain objects, you may decide that you want to edit that mask. You can do this by changing the shape of the mask, removing objects, changing colors or transforming the mask.

  1. Start Adobe Fireworks CS3 and open an existing document from your files that contains a bitmap mask that you would like to edit.
  2. Step 2

    Click on the layer in the Layers palette that contains the bitmap mask you would like to edit. The layer will be highlighted in gray once it is selected.

  3. Step 3

    Use the brush, shape or line tools to edit the current shape of the selected mask.

    Change the colors of the tools you are using to change the colors that the mask uses to cover the layer.

    Remove objects included in the mask by clicking to selecting the object you want to remove, choosing the “Edit” menu and clicking “Cut” to remove the selected object.

    Transform the mask by choosing the “Modify” menu, pointing to “Transform” and selecting to skew, scale rotate or flip one of the objects included in the mask.

    Save the new mask when you are finished editing it. You can go back and edit the mask at anytime.

How to Set Frame Timing in Fireworks

Frame timing in Adobe Fireworks CS3 allows you to set a delay to certain frames within your animation. This allows you to create a dramatic or comedic pause within that animation. You set frame timing by using the frame delay column in the Frames palette.

  1. Start Adobe Fireworks CS3 and open an existing document from your files that contains an animation to which you want to add frame timing.
  2. Step 2

    Display the Frames palette (if necessary) by choosing “Frames” from the Window menu.

  3. Step 3

    Locate the frame delay column in the Fireworks Frames palette. The frame delay column is the column just to the right of the frame name. You may see a number here that indicates a frame delay.

  4. Step 4

    Double-click on top of the frame delay column for the frame you want to set frame timing. A textbox will appear below the frame that lets you indicate the frame timing.

  5. Step 5

    Enter a number into the frame delay textbox. This number indicates the fraction of a second you want to delay this frame within the animation.

    Press the “Enter” on your keyboard to enter the amount. You will notice that the number you entered will now appear in the frame delay column beside the frame that you indicated.

How to Apply Glow Effects in Adobe Fireworks

A glow can be applied to any object in Adobe Fireworks CS3 to really draw attention to an object or text in your document. After you apply this effect, you can modify the color, opacity and distance of the glow. Keep reading to find out how you can use this popular effect.

  1. Start Adobe Fireworks CS3, and open an existing Fireworks document that contains an object or piece of text to which you would like to apply a glow effect.
  2. Step 2

    Select the Pointer tool from the toolbox, and click on the object that you want to glow. The object will be surrounded by a blue outline when it is selected. You can see the properties for the object displayed on the “Properties” pane at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Step 3

    Click on the “+” button that is beside the word “Filters” on the right side of the “Properties” pane. Choose “Shadow and Glow” from the pop-up menu, and click on either “Glow” or “Inner Glow.” Choosing the “Glow” effect will add a glow radiating out from your object while the “Inner Glow” effect will radiate that glow inward into the object.

  4. Step 4

    Double-click on the glow effect you have added to the object from the list that now appears under the word “Filters” in the “Properties” pane. A small window will appear that will allow you to customize the glow effect you have just added.

    Change the number in the “Width” text box on the left side of the small window to control the width of the glow. You can also change the color of the glow by clicking on the color well.

    Modify the settings on the right side of the small window to change the opacity, softness and halo offset.

The find and replace command in Adobe Fireworks CS3 can be used to quickly find and replace any instance of text, font, color, vector object or URL with a new entry. Follow the steps below to find out how you can use the find and replace command in Fireworks.

  1. Start Adobe Fireworks CS3 and open an existing document from your files that contains text or a vector object that you want to find and replace with another piece of text or a different vector object.
  2. Step 2

    Choose the “Window” menu and click “Find” to open the “Find” dialog box.

  3. Step 3

    Select what part of the document you want to search in from the “Search” drop-down list. You can choose to search in the whole document, a selection, a frame or another file.

  4. Step 4

    Use the second drop-down list to choose what you want to find. You can choose to find text, font, color, a URL or a vector object.

  5. Step 5

    Type what you want to find in the “Find” text box. Enter what you want to replace what you typed in the “Find” text box in the “Change to” text box.

  6. Step 6

    Add checkmarks to search only for the whole word, to match the case or in the regular expressions.

  7. Step 7

    Click the “Find” button to find the first instance of what you are looking for. Once you have found it, you can click the “Replace” button to replace that instance. Alternatively, you can use the “Replace All” button to find and replace all instances at one time.
